Quantum Physics Parts Ways With Reality - SlashDot.org

Posted by kdawson on Monday April 23, @09:28PMfrom the had-it-for-a-minute-there dept.

aeoneal sends us to PhysicsWeb for news guaranteed to induce headache in those wedded to the reality of, well, reality. Researchers from the University of Vienna have shown the violation of a stronger form of Bell's inequality known as Leggett's inequality. The result means that we must not only give up Einstein's hope of "no spooky action at a distance," we must also give up (some of) the idea that the world exists when we are not looking. From the article: "[Studies] have ruled out all hidden-variables theories based on joint assumptions of realism, meaning that reality exists when we are not observing it; and locality, meaning that separated events cannot influence one another instantaneously. But a violation of Bell's inequality does not tell specifically which assumption — realism, locality, or both — is discordant with quantum mechanics." From the Nature abstract: "Our result suggests that giving up the concept of locality is not sufficient to be consistent with quantum experiments, unless certain intuitive features of realism are abandoned." Only subscribers to Nature, alas, can know what features those are, as PhysicsWeb doesn't tell us.

Nintendo... need we say more?

The Image speaks for itself. Found in an article on the Wall Street Journal website, this shows that Nintendo is taking back its rightful place as the best Game system maker.

Police Objecting to Tickets From Red-Light Cameras
Posted by Zonk on Thursday April 12, @06:28PMfrom the a-little-hair-of-the-irony-dontcha-think dept.

caffiend666 writes "According to a Dallas Morning News article, any 'Dallas police officer in a marked squad car who is captured on the city's cameras running a red light will have to pay the $75 fine if the incident doesn't comply with state law ... Many police officers are angry about the proposed policy. The prevailing belief among officers has been that they can run red lights as they see fit.' Is this a case for or against governments relying on un-biased automated systems? Or, should anyone be able to control who is recorded on camera and who is held accountable?"

Woman Killed In Wii-Related Competition

Posted by ScuttleMonkey on Mon Jan 15, '07 03:45 PMfrom the natural-selection dept.

snuffin writes to tell us that a local radio competition to "hold your wee for a Wii" has ended with a Sacramento woman dead from water poisoning. From the article: "An Associated Press interview with another contestant, named James Ybarra, claimed that contestants were initially given eight ounce bottles of water to drink every fifteen minutes, with larger bottles being used once contestants began to drop out. According to Ybarra, 'They told us if you don't feel like you can do this, don't put your health at risk.' He described the victim as 'a nice lady' and that 'she was telling me about her family and her three kids and how she was doing it for her kids.'"

Billion Dollar Handout To Upgrade TVs
Posted by kdawson on Tuesday March 13, @06:55PMfrom the if-we-can-send-a-man-to-the-moon dept.

db32 writes "SFGate has the story of the cutoff date for those rabbit ear antennas that some of us grew up with (Feb. 19, 2009). Now while the story of analog vs. digital TV has been beaten to death, still I think there is something more here. 'The Department of Commerce's National Telecommunications and Information Administration... said it is setting aside $990 million to pay for the boxes. Each home can request up to two $40 coupons for a digital-to-analog converter box, which consumer electronics makers such as RCA and LG plan to produce.' Beyond my disdain for most TV to begin with, I am blown away that with all of our current problems — homelessness and crime on the home front, war fighting and terrorism abroad — our government is seriously going to spend this much money on upgrading peoples' televisions."

I love that last part.

Yay to the world we live in. We'll let you starve but you'll be entertained while doing it.

I don't like Toby Mac. Similarly, I don't like tobyMac. Maybe I'm not fond of people who's names also happen to be the name of one of the fattest burgers in the nation pre-"Big K Stacker" era (circa 2006). Maybe I'm not fond of the way he forgot the space between his first and last name… and forgot to capitalize his first name… Perhaps because the chap looks like cauliflower.

But I do know that I really hate that song "Made to Love." It's one of the more annoying songs I've heard in years! I even tried listening to some of his other music, but it's all just… bad. For instance, "Gone" So repetitive… And his voice is icky too. Yup, icky...

It doesn't help that the local 'harder' Christian radio station plays just under every two hours. In fact, this very morning it played at 0744, 0932, and again at 1124. Yes, I noted this. Being that it is currently 1242, I fully expect to have to switch stations in less than forty minutes.
